How It Works
Get Support for Your Mitigation Costs
We encourage child cares and schools to review the eligibility requirements and apply for mitigation reimbursement. After completing lead-in-water testing and finding lead, child care providers and school leaders play a critical role in mitigating lead exposure.
Our Process
LeadCare Illinois makes the mitigation process easy for child care providers and school leaders. Use the steps below to find out what to do if lead is found and how to apply for reimbursement for mitigation costs.
1. Determine the Source of Lead
If your facility discovers lead in your water, it is critical to determine the potential source of lead and take action to reduce lead levels. Review our resources to find out more.
2. Develop a Mitigation Plan
Use our resources to develop a plan to mitigate lead in water at your child care or school. A mitigation plan outlines how you will address identified issues using long- and short-term strategies to properly address lead in water. A mitigation plan is strongly encouraged for schools and required for child cares with lead at 2.01ppb or above.
3. Apply for Mitigation Support
For support with your planned mitigation activities, submit your information in our online application form. You will need to upload your lead‑in‑water test results during enrollment. Our team will review your information and contact you to confirm eligibility.
4. Meet With Our Team
If eligible, we will schedule a brief call where we will explain your options and outline how to work with a licensed plumber to perform your planned mitigation activities.
5. Get a Cost Estimate
You will work with a licensed plumber to get a cost estimate for the recommended mitigation work and will share the estimate with our team. We will provide you with the information we need!
6. Sign the Participant Agreement
Once we review your quote, we’ll share your estimated reimbursement amount. To move forward, we will ask you to sign our participant agreement, which will solidify your participation for mitigation reimbursement.
7. Complete the Mitigation Work
After signing, you’ll work with your licensed contractor to complete the mitigation work. When the work is complete, you’ll share the relevant information with us to confirm it.
8. Receive Payment
Once all required documents are received, reimbursement is typically issued within 30-45 days. Delays may occur if your paperwork is incomplete.
9. Complete Follow-Up Testing
Once your work has been completed, you are required to conduct two more rounds of testing through LeadCare Illinois to ensure your lead levels come down following mitigation.
